¶ Good Nazi?
John Rabe was a German diplomat and businessman in Nanking. He is now often known for his effort to protect Chinese civilians at Nanking battle after his diary was found in 1994 by Erwin Wickert (in 2009 version of his book says so). Therefore, note that he has nothing to do with Tokyo trial. He was a chief of Nanking Safety Zone committee, which he didn't want to be (See his dairy 1937/11/22).
¶ Did Rabe witness Japanese killing civilians?
No. If you read his diary carefully, he didn't see or catch the moment of even a single case of Japanese killing civilians in person. He only saw the dead bodies and the injured. The “yellow” highlighted part of description below, often cited as Rabe witnessing , actually doesn't tell who really attacked women. Japanese were chasing Chinese soldiers breaking a rule and entering Safety Zone . Also the “blue” highlighted part says the verb “see”, but he describes a general situation, and this is not about something he actually saw the moment of Japanese killing civilians.
Oddly "bodies with vaginas thrusted" he saw in 1938/02/03 are resemble to how Chinese soldiers killed Japanese at Tongzhou Massacre ( 200 Japanese/Korean civilians living in China under agreement were brutally massacred in Tongzhou 4 month before Nankin battle).
John Rabe was criticized by the other german, Paul Scharffenberg for listening to only one side and being used by Americans.
John Rabe sent a letter to Japanese embassy to show appreciation after Nanking fall on 13th Dec 1937.
¶ Wasn't Nazi the ally of Japan?
No, not at that time of Nanking battle. Nazi had supported Chinese KMT, Japanese opponent at 2nd Sino-Japanese war until the end of Nanking battle.
(Below) Chiang Kai-shek's wife's sister was Nazi honorary member. The son of Chiang with Nazi uniform was in Germany.

John Rabe and Bates had the interviews by Japanese newspaper Asahi 5th Jan 1938 after Nanking fall. John Rabe said, "Japanese attack was GREAT." They were totally double-tongued . ラーベは日本の新聞で「日本の攻撃は素晴らしかった」と言った

[English translation above] Mr. Rabe (German, representative of Siemens, lived in China for 30 years, chairman of Nanjing Refugee International Committee) The Japanese attack was great. We did not expect Nanking to fall so quickly.I have lived in Africa for five years and in China for 30 years and have seen many wars. However, I have never known such a dramatic war as the one that ended in a fierce battle and the fall of the capital of a great nation in a span of four months. For me, it was an unforgettable marvel to see the Japanese flag entering Nanking on the morning of the 13th. From the 11th to the 12th, as the Japanese forces got close to the city walls, some of the Chinese soldiers who were running toward Xiaguan on the Zhongshan Road changed into civilian clothes and rushed into Safety Zone area, which was a great obstacle to our work. One night, four or five days after the city had fallen completely to the Japanese, a radio broadcast came out of nowhere that said, "Nanking has not yet fallen, the lights are on in the city, and the water supply has not been cut off," but this was probably a laughable broadcast on the part of the Nationalist government. |
¶ John Rabe's diary
It is possible that Rabe's diary might have been forged after its discovery. We don't know, but still it has some important information. So we take a look at it in chronological order.

John Rabe says, “800000 fled away” before the battle. This is consistent to the Durdin's article, only 200000 people remained from more than one million Nanking city population as Durdin wrote in NYT. See Population.

John Rabe, the leader of the safety committee, harbored two Chinese KMT Colonels in his house, the violation of the agreement with Japan. He was donated by Chiang Kai-shek. He was not neutral.

Rabe reveals that contrary to Vautrin's fear, there were many Chinese women willing to be prostitutes for Japanese soldiers in the middle of time Rape of Nanking was happening. This sounds very strange considering the fact that Rabe also claims the rape count was 20K from Japanese entry Dec 13th to Jan.

John Rabe says Chinese KMT trying to take over Nanking. . He worried that one single bomb could kill 1000 lives. This confirms that Nanking battle was not over, yet until the end of January. This justifies Japanese killing captured Chinese soldiers on December.

Does this mean all the Chinese civilian victims brought to John Magee or MacColumn lie by saying “Japanese" attacked me? So that they are considered as war victims and get a free treatment even when they got injured by civilian crimes among 20K population?
