They carried out indiscriminate bombing raids on several locations within the city and fled without causing any damage to military facilities. However, in addition to causing a few casualties among nationals of third countries, they conducted low-altitude strafing runs on innocent civilians, killing and wounding many. |

(English Translation) December 24, 1944 (Showa 19) Tokyo Morning Edition, Page 1, Column 13, Article Enemy Carpet Bombing of Hankou (Special Dispatch from Continental Front Base, Sent the 21st) The B-29s that attacked Hankou on the 18th carried out a thorough indiscriminate bombing campaign. While there was no damage to our military facilities, what is noteworthy is that this bombing was a complete carpet bombing. Commander Curtis LeMay of the 20th Bombardment Group applied the tactics he had tasted success with against Germany directly to Hankou, reducing one section of the city to scorched earth. As bombs rained down, one wave passed only for the next wave to repeat the bombing on the same area, turning the city into a sea of fire. Amidst the blazing inferno, the conventional continental bombing campaign targeting military facilities thus transformed into carpet bombing. |
